Data Mining
Data Mining is a term that refers to the analysis of large sets of observational data with the goal of discovering knowledge. The data sets of interest are often huge, in terms of the number of records or the number of variables involved. They also tend to be observational or historical data sets that were not collected directly for the goals of the intended study. As such, these data sets tend to lack the integrity and relevance of data that is collected directly for the study of interest. However, the analysis of such data can still yield incredibly useful information.
Although many techniques are useful in data mining, techniques that deal well with messy and unruly data are especially valuable. Tree-based methods, neural nets, and cluster analysis are useful for modeling such data. Visualization methods and methods that help reduce the complexity of the data are also of great value.
